What Is Narrative Ballet?
Narrative ballet, also known as story ballet or ballet d’action, stands as a compelling testament to the power of weaving stories through dance. Unlike abstract ballets, which focus on movement and form, narrative ballets tell stories that are often drawn from fairy tales, classical mythology, or historical events. Through a blend of music and choreography — and often, elaborate sets and costumes — they unfold a tale as captivating as the movements of the dancers.
Why Narrative Ballet Is Important for Global Culture
Far from being archaic, narrative ballet is a form of dance that holds its value today, for many reasons:
Accessible for the uninitiated. Storytelling performances often serve as an engaging gateway to the world of ballet for newcomers, especially children. The familiar stories, many of which audiences have learned at a tender age and long forgotten, provide an enchanting and culturally affirming experience.
Unhindered by language barriers. The emotions and tales conveyed through dance are universal. They resonate with audiences worldwide and need no translation. This makes it easier for every nation to share its literature, folklore, or history with others. For example, The Nutcracker story began as a German and French fairytale adapted for Russian ballet, was popularized by a Russian-American choreographer, and is now beloved the world over.
Reinvented for the contemporary world. Story ballet is incredibly versatile. Old narratives can be retooled to be more inclusive or reflect current social concerns, and contemporary choreographers are also crafting new stories that reflect modern values and challenges. For instance, Justin Peck’s The Most Incredible Thing, based on a tale by Hans Christian Andersen, explores themes of creativity and resilience in the face of adversity, which can appeal to many audiences in many contexts.
